Now that the auction is over I figure it is ok to post this one here. Thomas Auction just liquidated the following plant http://thomasauction.com/auction-details.asp?id=348 and from speaking with folks during the preview they were going full out till very recently making parts for Pratt and Whitney. Many of the people at the preview were saying they got caught passing along materials with fake certs and bad titanium. Anyone know what happened there? Watching the webcast they said they were pulling all computers from the sale for use as evidence!

By the way, if anyone attended in person were they handing out free liquor to their high bidders. I can't for the life of me understand some of the bids I saw. Here's a bargain someone paid $450 for this lot? https://cdn.globalauctionplatform.co...b5/540x360.jpg. http://thomasauction.hibid.com/lot/1...=1346&selCat=0 or this guy Fowler 74 225 555 LCD Digital Depth Gage | eBay I saw go for $200.

In the old days people used to buy stuff at these auctions to sell on eBay, I think if Thomas auctions was smart they would allow people to start buying cheap junk on eBay to consign at their auctions! Anyhow those were a few comical egregious things I saw there but it seemed like most of what I was watching went real high. They had some awesome piles of tooling there that was a true guess as to how much was inside.

Machine Tool Arbor Spacers

Anybody out there inventory arbor spacers in wacky thicknesses? I need four different spacers for a .875" shaft, ranging in thickness from under an inch to right around 1.250". But the exact widths aren't "nice" numbers (for example, 1.013).

I realize I have the following options, as well:
1) Make them myself (which I might end up doing)
2) Assemble a "set" of off-the-shelf spacers to equal the desired amount (however this is a production environment where changeover is key, so reducing parts helps maintain friendliness between us engineers and the tool crib guys).

ot? Machine out stuck trumpet valves?

Just had a guy come to me with a unique challenge. Machine out stuck valves on an antique trumpet. He said he had taken it to a couple of insturment repair places to no avail. I told him to bring it by simply because I'd never worked on a musical insturment.
Anyone have experience with this?
have fun

From a large, professional (well, not when I have dealt with them), dealer to boot. Impressive in that apparently no one even had a camera for a few quick pictures. Considering they have machines up for over a year maybe they could have put it off a few hours to get some snaps. I assume they are fixing this as we speak. This would be laughably lazy if not.

Machine Tool Rebuilders?

I spend a lot of time here on practical machinist lurking and rustdreaming.

I see many pictures of machines in their natural oily environment with chips all around. Then once in a while I will see a show piece machine looking better than O.E.M. Recently a gorgeous red 10ee.

Which gererates my question. Are these machines the product of a professional machine tool rebuilder or a master craftsman--or both. What would be the reason or thought process to have a pro rebuild or handle the restoration in house. Only money? Degree of talent or tooling? Can a rebuilder do better?
