How are long small diameter tapers made

I have a job to do that requires making some long tapers. These are going to be bent into what's called a surgical hook. When I say long I'm talking about 6" and about 3/16" diameter tapering down to a very sharp point something like a scribe. It's much too thin to turn in the lathe and I don't have a toll post grinder. I could forge them and then sand the hoof marks out but that's going to be a bit iffy. How are things like that normally made? Centerless grinder with canted wheels? Thanks.

For a one-off project, I need to attach this hydraulic pressure gauge to a chamber in a steel block. The steel is free-machining, unproblematic. Inside is hydraulic fluid, at pressures up to 400 Bar. How do I design the receptacle that this screws into?

The thread is a parallel (non-tapered) 1/4" metric G (Whitworth British Standard Pipe Parallel) intended for strength, but not to seal. So the seal must come from one of two places. Either the short 5mm brass stub should be forced into some type of taper, or the 10mm flat must bear against a trapped sealing washer or o-ring. In either case, I can't just drill an 11.8mm hole and tap it.

how to approach machining some parts

I'm relatively new to machining. I took a couple of courses at the local community college years again, but recently have gotten into it again as a hobby.

I'm trying to build a stirling engine using Jan Ridder's plans and I am stumped as to how to setup/machine some of the parts for the crankshaft. Below I've included a picture of the parts in the plan I'm having problems with. Specifically parts 2, 4, & 6:

Initially I turned things to the diameter, then parted them off at the appropriate length, but now I can't figure out the best way to hold them. Upon further reflection it occurred to me that perhaps I should turn the offets before I part them off. Overall, I'm completely stumped.

Horse bit manufacturing - how do they do it?

So i've been missing in action for a while. Got a few more automation and PLC projects under my belt since my lasts posts. Great thanks to the automation section for the help.

I have also been focusing on quality of life and started to jump horses. Looking at some of the equipment, this company makes EXCEPTIONAL quality metal bits. What is the optimal setup for doing this on a large scale?

Hey everybody,
I'm relatively new to machining. I've taken a mill class and a lathe class at the local community college to learn the basics and I will figure the rest out with a little experience. I've got a question pertaining to pressure knurlers. I know these are inferior to the saddle knurlers, but those are pricey and I'd rather make due with my pressure knurlers for the time being. Is there a way to get a nice looking knurl from this type or should I expect a mediocre finish from these? When I knurl, I am always getting a double knurl pattern, I don't know how to correct this, is it just a matter of raising or lowering the knurl wheels? When I set the wheels up, I give them a slight offset to the right or left, I read to do this somewhere. I'm sure people are very good at this type of setup but I can't get good results thus far. Also, I am using a phase II setup so my toolholder has the knurls built into it. Thanks for the help.

Want to sharpen the annular cutters today, some need gashing first, if thats the correct term...cutting away some material between teeth (all done on a T&CG).

Not sure what to get in there with.

How to package VERY small parts for shipping

I have to ship some very small parts I'm making and just about anything I come up with seems hokey. I need them to be kept from being lost. A small 2" x 2" re-sealable bag is cavernous for the parts, and my thought is that it would cause more grief than relief when customer tries to remove the parts. Right now I am leaning toward sticking them on a small piece of Scotch Tape and then sticking that to a small piece of clear Mylar. But while that seems best for logistics, it seems really hokey to me. Parts are for all intents and purposes .100" Long x .002" Diameter. Figure 100 pieces, approximately. NDAs prohibit me describing them much beyond that. Anyone have any nifty ideas that will at least look professional arriving? Thanks

How to? Dotco Right Angle Grinder Rebuild

So Ive got an old Dotco right angle die grinder that I would like to rebuild. Its a 10L1201, very similar to Dotco 10L1280 Parts List and Diagram : eReplacementParts.com . So I have a rebuild kit but I cannot figure how to separate the rotor, sleeve, and spindle to get to the vanes. There is no c-clip on the bottom of the spindle and I havent had any success trying to punch the spindle out. Co-workers may think you have to jam the spindle somehow to wrench the pinion off and thus separate the spindle. And if so, is it right hand thread or left hand thread? So far Ive probably already destroyed the assembly, yet I want to know how this works so that I can fix other vintage industrial grinders I have. Thanks
