OT - Purpose of this stopcock and nozzle?

More curious than anything else -- what is this stopcock and nozzle originally intended for?

The stopcock has a standard 1/4" NPT male thread. It appears to be marked "NAT," with a "shield and S" logo, and what may be number 845 on one side. The tip has a brass threaded nozzle at the end of the chromed piece. That piece has a straight thread, with a sort of compression seal where it bottoms into the stopcock.

From a large, professional (well, not when I have dealt with them), dealer to boot. Impressive in that apparently no one even had a camera for a few quick pictures. Considering they have machines up for over a year maybe they could have put it off a few hours to get some snaps. I assume they are fixing this as we speak. This would be laughably lazy if not.

Are shut off valves required for airlines?

In the new shop that I have just taken over we have some old antique airline fittings that have a valve that you have to shut off before disconnecting an airline. All these fittings leak and the valves leak also. We are installing all new standard quick connect airline fittings. Is it required to have a shut off valve at each outlet? If not we are just going to do away with the shut off valves.

Help! Need to drill hardened 5mm dowel pin

Hi.
Im in a pickle. Ive got an automotive flywhel wit a broken alignment dowel. Its 5mm and broken below the surface of the flywheel. Regular bits skid right off. Idlike to center drill it out, then use oil and a punch to hydraulicly push it out, but i cant drill it at all. Would a carbide drill do it? Im looking on the mcmaster website and cant seem to find which bit to order.

Machine Tool Rebuilders?

I spend a lot of time here on practical machinist lurking and rustdreaming.

I see many pictures of machines in their natural oily environment with chips all around. Then once in a while I will see a show piece machine looking better than O.E.M. Recently a gorgeous red 10ee.

Which gererates my question. Are these machines the product of a professional machine tool rebuilder or a master craftsman--or both. What would be the reason or thought process to have a pro rebuild or handle the restoration in house. Only money? Degree of talent or tooling? Can a rebuilder do better?

Help with rethreading a disk shaped part

Somewhat new to machining. Have a ID threaded disk, Approx. dimensions, ID 1.750", OD 2.125", thickness .250", Material I think is cast iron. Threads are metric 1mm pitch. Threads appear to be rough and won't allow it to screw past halfway onto the male part. Male part threads have the same major dia. all the across. My thought is to hold the part in a 4 jaw chuck and attempt to rethread with the appropriate insert. Need to hold the part out at the end of the chuck jaws for visibility. Have thought of making a spacer with a hole slightly larger than the part and an OD slightly smaller than the part which would still have to sit flat and perpendicular to the chuck face and part. Seem like a lot of machining just to make a spacer. Wondering if one of you might have some other ideas or for something that would accomplish the set-up and then be removed before rethreading. Was hoping not to have to remake the entire part.

Machining schools/training

I think some other people have the same topics but their threads are years old. Anyways, are there any schools or shops in Massachusetts that offer proper training in CNC/tooling, especially during summer/winter breaks or late afternoons? I'm a sophomore ME at UMass Amherst and been working long hours in the EE department's machine shop for over a year but think I've reached a peak learning point with my current boss-all manual milling, lathing, etc. I tried contacting the ME department's shop managers, but they hate people coming in during holiday. I looked up some schools and only WPI may have something flexible. Just want to continue my academics and machining at the same time. Right now, spending my free time reading a CNC book. Willing to dump a couple grand. Thanks!
