Wire EDM Setup: Tips and tricks

In a different thread, we have been discussing Axis rotation and how to use it. I thought that it would be interesting to have others comment on different tips and tricks for Setup. Here is one from that thread: Feel free to add others!!!!!!

Another way to setup a part that has little material around it would be to put the corners of the block on the table. We have a 45 triangle that we use during the setup to get it roughly in position. Then we indicate it in using axis rotation set at 45 degrees.

OR....After you have learned that one, just put it in at any angle. Mount an indicator with a magnetic base on the head of your machine. At one end of the block, move the machine until you get a zero on the indicator. Set zero on the display of your machine. Don't touch the indicator but back off using the machine and move to the other end of the block. move the machine until you get a zero on the indicator again. Leave the machine right there. Grab your scientific calculator. Look at the number display. Using the calculator, take the smallest number and divide it by the larger number. Then press INVERT TAN on the calculator. You now have the angle that the block is in the machine. Enter that angle (or it's Complement(90 minus the result)) in AXIS Rotation. Now, move the machine using the appropriate axis and watch the indicator stay at zero. It is now indicated in. NOTE: most newer machines have a function to do this for you using a wire and sensing the edge with a wire. But you should use an indicator anyway for a double check. We have found that the indicator method is faster, though.

Any uses for Mercury??

I had someone I work with as me if I had any use for ~1/4 lb of Mercury. Does anyone know of any useful things this can be used for SAFELY?
If anyone needs it or wants it, let me know. I imagine there are plenty of laws about handling/disposal, but I do not have it in my posession at this time.--Grant

How to? Dotco Right Angle Grinder Rebuild

So Ive got an old Dotco right angle die grinder that I would like to rebuild. Its a 10L1201, very similar to Dotco 10L1280 Parts List and Diagram : eReplacementParts.com . So I have a rebuild kit but I cannot figure how to separate the rotor, sleeve, and spindle to get to the vanes. There is no c-clip on the bottom of the spindle and I havent had any success trying to punch the spindle out. Co-workers may think you have to jam the spindle somehow to wrench the pinion off and thus separate the spindle. And if so, is it right hand thread or left hand thread? So far Ive probably already destroyed the assembly, yet I want to know how this works so that I can fix other vintage industrial grinders I have. Thanks

Are shut off valves required for airlines?

In the new shop that I have just taken over we have some old antique airline fittings that have a valve that you have to shut off before disconnecting an airline. All these fittings leak and the valves leak also. We are installing all new standard quick connect airline fittings. Is it required to have a shut off valve at each outlet? If not we are just going to do away with the shut off valves.

thinking about a Tree J325 - pros, cons?

I'm looking at buying some "real" CNC capability. My current shop setup can't support a 10 HP spindle and toolchanger machine, from a space and electrical standpoint. So, I'm considering what can be done with a knee-mill type machine, and the Tree J325 looks like a decent candidate. I would like to get any feedback from users/owners of these machines, regarding the Dynapath 20 control, and issues that may be common problems with the machine overall. A few items that I think I know, comment welcome:
-can't do rigid tapping as originally sold by Tree(?)
-does have full 3D toolpath capability, and helical interpolation
-limited parts and service availability
-seems to have a greater range of spindle speed than most other knee-type machines (50-6K RPM)

earliest cat-40 machinel?

Searching on this produces lots of vaguely related stuff, but not the answer to the specific question.

Does anybody know when the first CAT-40 machines appeared? (Presumably put to work by CAT...)

When did machines with cat-40 spindles first become commercially available?
