Air Compressor location-Inside or Outside of Shop

New shop electrical is getting connected. I was planning to put my air compessor (IR 5HP 80 gal. tank, 175 PSI) on the outside mostly to eliminate noise. A buddy said that is not the best location as the outside has dust, etc. that wears the compressor out sooner than having it inside. The compressor has an air filter. Where did you locate your air compressor and why at that location? Did it work out as you planned? Any problems? Did you change the location? Would you do anything different? Thanks. Gary R.

Very quiet grinding dust collection system

So at my job we have a grinder to sharpen ice skate I'll attach pictures. We use to use a shop vac to collect dust on the other machine but it was to loud and the boss can't stand it. So we are now in the market for something to move the dust outside or contain it but we aren't sure what to use. Cheaper is better as the machine was already pretty expensive. So what do you guys think? Btw this will run for several hour periods so it can't overheat.

Recreating a Bench Vise Lead Screw Advice

Hello,

I'm new to the forum. Looking for some thoughts on my project. I've acquired an old Prentiss bench vise that is missing the lead screw, or at least the original. As it came it had a make-do lead screw which was just a piece of all-thread and a nut welded on the end(see original pictures). The thread pitch of the all-thread is too fine and requires too many revolutions to get any linear travel, not to mention it was kind of a bang up job. I've drawn my own lead screw "knob" modeled after the old Athol/Starret bench vises and my idea is to weld a piece of 3/4-6 ACME threaded rod on the knob. I will turn down the ACME rod to .5 diameter and insert into the mating end of the "knob" as means of concentric fixturing for the welding, and then back to the lathe to clean the face of welding buildup. I know it could be done as a single piece to avoid welding but I am a complete amateur on the lathe and wouldn't know where to being on cutting threads. Also the price would be much higher for the stock material required. I'm looking for input, alternatives, advice, anything. And feel free to critique my drawing while you're at it.

The knob drawing is final but the acme threads in the assembly drawings is not to size or scale. It is just to illustrate the overall idea of the part assembly.

Can a press fit be airtight?

I wish to thank all of you who know more that me.

I am beginning to manufacture a MADE IN USA product for museums and archives around the world. It is an aluminum structure with a glass top that is filled with argon gas. The technology is originally from the food industry and adapted to the conservation world with studied done by The Getty Museum, the Tate Museum in London and NIST on behalf of the National Archives.

My question is: Can I get an airtight seal by pressing an aluminum tube with an internal valve into the side wall of the aluminum enclosure. The wall of the enclosure is about .125" thick and the tube is about .375" dia. with a wall thickness of .100". NOTE: I am looking for a long term "air proof" seal with less than <.5% oxygen leakage over 10 years. The NIST leak tolerance is for <.5% oxygen over 150 years. My current installation method is to silver solder the tube in place.

Have Bullard Cutmaster 75 36" VTL and she is feeling her age. My question is; has anyone worked these and can give me some idea of what I am in for.

Side head dead since I started 5 years ago.

All o-rings on pressure plate need replacing as well as seal on main drive pulley.

New Member Introduction

Hello everyone,

I have been a reader of this forum for years and just now became a member and wanted to take a few minutes to introduce myself.

I am an engineer by education, but ever since I can remember I have been a tinkerer, and making things has always been my passion. From breaking open toys as a kid to modifying cars through high school and now to operating CNC machines I have enjoyed making things that could not be found elsewhere.

Anyone use Cor-Ten steel

Hi all,

has anyone here used Cor-Ten or Corten steel?

I have an idea for a range of garden products that would look good with the type of natural rust finish that this metal gives but have never used it before.
