Machine Tool Rebuilders?

I spend a lot of time here on practical machinist lurking and rustdreaming.

I see many pictures of machines in their natural oily environment with chips all around. Then once in a while I will see a show piece machine looking better than O.E.M. Recently a gorgeous red 10ee.

Which gererates my question. Are these machines the product of a professional machine tool rebuilder or a master craftsman--or both. What would be the reason or thought process to have a pro rebuild or handle the restoration in house. Only money? Degree of talent or tooling? Can a rebuilder do better?

Problem with Stratasys Printer

I was wondering if someone could help us with an issue we are having with our Stratasys FDM Vantage printer. When printing, the support tip does not extend from the head and just ejects the material on the build sheet about 3/16 of an inch away, so it never adheres. We have no problem with the model tip; and have tried different support tips and material canisters with the same result. We have run the calibration job, as well as the Z-stage calibration many times. Anyone experienced this issue before? Any input would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

TC

Setting up a 3D printing station

We just signed a PO for a 3D printer from Stratsys. It's the UPrint SE Plus. It comes with the Clean Station SRS-DT Jr. I have been tasked with making a moveable work station for this. I am planning on a cart with a 1/2 hexagon shape, Computer on the right, Printer in the Middle, and wash station on the far left. We are new to 3D printing and I don't want to keep adding to the cart/table. The plan is to have it be a sit down work station, where a model can be opened and converted on the computer and printed, then cleaned.

After looking around on youtube, it looks like the support system for one of these could be significant. Storage for consumables, cleaning supplies, solvent, paper towel... Since I have no experience with this system, any input on what I need, and what would make things streamlined would be appreciated. I would like this to be self contained, so it can be pushed around the shop for demos, or cleaning, or proximity to the user.

Thanks,

Just curious on this.

I like functional parts. I have, therefore never used 3D printing for my own personal parts. I take the much extra time to machine them. My machines are old and mostly manual.

My customers like 3d printed parts. The 3D parts need to be sanded for fit (tolarancing them is hit or miss). Inserts need to be glued in with ca since the plastic it too brittle for self tapping screws (or drills). My bandsaw produces a better finish so I need to sand or hit it with acetone. But, I can walk into a meeting with high level execs and they love it! They really eat it up.

Designing a 3D METAL printer

Hi everyone!

I would like to discuss the pros/cons and engineering challenges one would face in order to create a 3D printer capable of printing in metal.

So we have a basic 2D cad system (Powerstation) that is sufficient for our needs and a CAM system (Smartcam) that also gets the job done. We are currently looking to get into 3D printing to use for prototyping parts instead of making prototype molds and all the time and changes required with that process.
What's the most realistic software to consider to make the 3D model? Solidworks and AutoCAD are cost prohibitive so we're looking for something less sophisticated that will allow us to go from a 2D drawing to a 3D model. Looked at Sketchup (looks more like something for architects doing houses than building molds) and Rhinoceros ( more along the lines of what we're looking for). Has anyone used these or have suggestions of another system that we should consider?
Thanks for any help.
